Laytdog interviews...Eric Roman

For this installment of Laytdog interviews... Laytdog interviews Eric Roman- the creator of the Dracula's Curse -the CastleVania 3 page.

Laytdog: When did you start the Dracula's Curse page?

Eric: Why did I even start my website? Well back then, before I started The Page, CastleVania sites were super rare. The only sites I found were Rob's Castlevania 2 Page, Demon's Castle, and a CastleVania Dungeon which was just starting out. I was really looking for a CastleVania 3 site, since CastleVania 3's my fave. I only found tips for the game, but nothing at all focusing on the game itself, not including The Dungeon's review on CV 3. When AOL released it's Personal Publisher, I had an idea. I would make the CastleVania 3 page! It started out as a one page copy-and-pasted-in-a-few-minutes web site, with nothing more than a password for the last stage and two pics of a Skull Knight and a Dragon Skull cannon. The Page premiered May 28th, 1997, sometime in the afternoon.

Laytdog: Whats your best Nes memory?

Eric: Aaah! Memories.. sweet memories. Oh sorry, I was drifting off. Anyway, my favorite NES memories are born of a show called Video Power. It used to give tips on how to win at the games, but in it's second season it turned into a (video) game show. I remember when they had this Power Players Challenge where some kids from the audience were given 30 seconds to play a game, usually Battletoads or Chip and Dale, and the two players with the highest score would win. Afterward, they'd be questioned and awarded with Pizza Points which were stuck to their Power Vests with velcro. After that, the winner would get a run throughout the Power Mall to grab any and every game they could and stick it to their Power Vests. What a show!

Laytdog: I remember watching that show at 6 in the morning before I went to school. Everyone I knew wanted to run through the Power Mall.

Eric: Check it. If I was in the mall, I' d first take a bookbag full of carts, empty it by tossing them down the slide, then rip games off the wall, stuff it in the bag, run to the slide, dump the games, repeat! See, now if I was on the show, I'd KILL IT! Especially if it was the CastleVania 3 week. I could teach them some things! Some of the questions they asked were inaccruate, as I remember it, and I'd slam that Power Players Challenge!

Laytdog: What do you think about that crazy New style Nes?

Eric: New style NES? You mean that teeny tiny newer NES system? I don't know. The one I bought on 6-6-96 (all sixes! )produced faint vertical lines. Apart from that, I'd still have trouble answering. I mean, the old grey box let you hook up A/V cables to it so you can record your games. I think the newer NESsie should be at most $45.

Laytdog: Would you buy a new Nes game if it came out now?

Eric: I'd either wait for the review or wait for the ROM to be dumped so I could check it out then and there. If it was a CastleVania, highly unlikely, I'd get it. If it was a Parodius game, most definately!

Laytdog: Do you use the Game Genie when you play games?

Eric: I play to win.... WITHOUT GAME GENIE!!!!!

Laytdog: How many Nes games do you own?

Eric: When I had the NES during the Christmas 1990---->New Years 1992 , I'd say I had about 25 games. I gave them all to my cousin, who lost them. I thought that NES would be obselite with the advent of the Super Nintendo. However during my 'second Nintendo childhood' I now have about 15.

Laytdog: Do you feel that Castlevania 3 is the best of the series?

Eric: Shall I compare 3 to a summers day? UUH NOO.. Hmm. Super CastleVania 4 was totally awesome! It used all of the new features Super Nintendo was meant for! Sadly as SNES games progressed, the special effects were waning (fading). For example, the only cool effect of Dracula X I could think of at the moment was the flames in the background. What else? Can't think of anything...... I've never had CastleVania Bloodlines, but I'd think it's graphics to be average. This is Genesis we're talking about. CastleVania Symphony of the Night? Haven't played it, but I will. Indeed I will. Did ya see that ball of dead bodies?! That's AWESOME!

Laytdog: Nothing like a ball of dead bodies. Thanks for being interviewed and good luck on Dracula's Curse
